Our 7th honorary non-human board member is the Eurasian wren (Troglodytes troglodytes),

It’s small but mighty! Here are some wren facts:

  • For such a small bird (only the goldcrest is smaller in the UK), it has a big song.

  • Wrens are the most common UK breeding bird, although they are in decline due mainly to habitat loss and severe weather.

  • Their song can reach up to 90 decibels, making it pound-for-pound one of the loudest bird songs in the world.

  • The wren's nickname, 'King of Birds' stems not from their song (although maybe it helped), but to an ancient folktale where the wren wins a battle with other birds to fly the highest by hiding in an eagle's feathers - a reminder that we need more than brute force to succeed!

  • It is related to the 'musician wren', whose song is famous for intervals that match scales found in Western music.
