‘ōʻū (Psittirostra psittacea)

Ōʻū yes!

Meet our latest Honorary Board Member the ‘ōʻū (Psittirostra psittacea), an extinct species of Hawaiian honeycreeper 🦜

Last seen in the 1980s, the ‘ōʻū had strong wings to travel between the Hawaiian islands. Unfortunately, it is thought that along such journeys the ‘ōʻū encountered mosquitoes transmitting diseases lethal to most Hawaiian honeycreepers.

As humans demonstrate renewed ambition to further populate the Earth and beyond, the cautionary tale of the ‘ōʻū’ reminds us of the possible dangers of increased mobility and the fragility of life. Listen to the sounds of the ‘ōʻū on @melisakamancha’s track by streaming The Last Scream album series via the 🔗 in our bio.
