Background
The origin of Camp X-Ray dates back to the attacks on the US on September 11th 2001. Because of the Taliban's government's support for Al-Qaeda, the organisation that carried out the attacks, the US -led a multinational invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001. During the conflict, the US and allied forces have captured a number of Taliban or Al-Qaeda affiliated 'enemy combatants.' These 'enemy combatants', including some minors under age 16, were flown to a US Military Base in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, and detained in what was initially called Camp X-Ray (later changed to Camp Delta). Many of these detainees have been held since 2001 without trial. The US has been accused by a number of groups, including the Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, of violating the rights of prisoners of war under Geneva Convention regulations. Approximately 300 detainees remain in Cuba.
