Excerpt from A Letter from Home (transcribed from performance devised by different participants)
The boys are playing computer games with their uncle, Sedophe
Liam: You missed! You missed again, I keep winning!
Gentil: No you're not, give it here
Liam: Not this again, did you hear how loud was it, everyone was shouting in the house, all about Africa, you couldn't listen to any of it, even Uncle J,
Gentil: They wasn't shouting, and where is Africa anyway, it's somewhere I don't know
Liam: Africa's a country
Gentil: So what do you want to know about Africa for? We're in Europe, it's good in here.
Liam: We're in the UK you mean... they was talking about Africa, what is Africa about? Some letter came from Congo, some Africa thing, whatever, it's not Africa here, we're here in England, it doesn't make sense at all...
Gentil: Uncle, want to play? ... it's good
Sedophe: You guys, I hear you talk about Africa? Don't you know Africa?
Liam: (makes face like he's smelled something bad): Africa is a nasty country
Sedophe: It's what?
Liam: It's not nice
Sedophe: What are you talking about?
Liam: I came here when I was five, I just thought Africa was horrible, disgusting.
Sedophe: Do you know you were born in Africa ?
Liam: Yes I do know that, but it's different here, here I've got so many friends, I haven't been there since I was a child, I'm more used to it here, I don't know it there
Sedophe: Africa is where we come from and we have to respect that, you were born in Africa
Benjamin: My dad told me about Africa, but I don't know about Africa, I only know about England, oh Africa, Africa (makes gesture with his hand of adults talking)
