Theatre for Everybody, Gaza, Palestinian Territories

Background

The conflict in Israel/Palestinian Territories is the result of two groups laying historical claim to the same land. After the declaration of the State of Israel following war in 1948 many Palestinians were displaced into refugee camps in Gaza and the West Bank as well as surrounding countries. The Oslo peace process in 1994 led to the establishment of the Palestinian National Authority and independent control of some parts of the occupied West Bank and Gaza territories by democratically elected Palestinian leaders. Violent conflict between the two sides is ongoing, and the Israeli government has been constructing a 'defensive' wall around the Palestinian Territories in response to suicide attacks against Israeli citizens. This wall was declared illegal by the UN and the international Court of Justice in La Hague.
