This unique musical performance will take audiences on a journey through the history of the Congolese rumba, from links with Cuban musicians in pre-independence Congo to rumba through successive reinterpretations, including pop and rock inspired 60s rumba to the soukous fast paced rumba on the streets of Kinshasa in the 1990s. The performance will explore each phase of rumba, its links to pre and post colonial Congolese society, and the influence of global musical trends. It will incorporate live music, dance, spoken word and culminate in the performance of a selection of Britannia Rumba songs.
