The conflict in Kosovo took place from 1998-1999 and was related to the wider Balkans conflicts and the break up of the former Yugoslavia. Kosovo is a region of southern Serbia, where the majority of residents identify as ethnic Albanian-Kosovan rather than Serbian. Tensions in the region of Kosovo from the early 1990s led to a growing independence movement and clashes between the Yugoslav/Serbian Army and the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). These clashes were accompanied by reports of ethnic cleansing by Serbian groups in the region and large scale displacements. In response, NATO began a three-month campaign of bombing against the Serbian government to restore order. A ceasefire was signed in June of 1999 and a UN (UNMIK – United Nations Mission in Kosovo) peace-keeping force was deployed to attend to the administration of Kosovo. According to the UN, Kosovo is populated mainly by Albanians but up to 120,000 Serbians still live in the region in protected enclaves. As of 2007 there are ongoing international negotiations to establish the final status of Kosovo.
