The country of Afghanistan has lived under the shadow of a war for the past 25 years. However, The origin of the most recent conflict dates back to the attacks on the US on September 11th 2001. Because of the Taliban’s support for Al-Qaeda, the organisation that carried out the attacks, the US-led a multinational invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001. The conflict was quick and ended in a decisive defeat of the Taliban government. During the conflict, the US and allied forces captured a number of Taliban or Al-Qaeda affiliated ‘enemy combatants.’ Sporadic violence is ongoing and large numbers of American and British troops are on active duty in Afghanistan.
