This conflict is largely a border dispute that is a legacy of colonialism. The low-lying, oil rich Bakassi peninsula was claimed by both countries based on various contradictory colonial treaties. Although the inhabitants of the peninsula consider themselves Nigerian, the land has been transferred to Camaroon control. However, there continue to be occasional violent outbreaks.
